Pet Insurance Information
Many people have asked lately about pet insurance when they see a post on social media about dogs going through unforeseen medical issues. There are so many companies now, we know it can be very confusing. Here’s our suggestions.
(Disclaimer: we are NOT professional insurance people just pet parents who have been there - done that)
👉🏻Don’t just rely on online quotes. Call for quotes and compare apples to apples. Many will easily fit a budget of around $35/month per animal, however here are some things we’d recommend based on our experience of having multiple dogs with insurance. Some company websites are really insurance brokers. You can get quoted with different underwriters under the same umbrella name.
{i.e. PetsBest who we use. Each dog has a different “policy” with a different underwriter, unless you sign up several pets at once}
👉🏻 We highly suggest you make sure they cover items such as
cancer, inherited diseases, rehabilitation and alternative medicine (i.e. laser and acupuncture).
👉🏻Make sure you get no annual limit!
Unfortunately some things can be well over $5000 and up to $10,000.
👉🏻Some people choose not to get the “preventative coverage” rider for annual vaccines.
Compare the added monthly cost versus just paying for them outright.
👉🏻get a deductible that you are comfortable with. Most are annual not per occurrence.
The higher the deductible the cheaper the monthly payment.
👉🏻And no matter what - have a credit card or cash available with at least $5000 to get in the door of any specialist facility or university,
Most insurance companies are on a reimbursement basis‼️
** See the options below
Be forewarned that most insurance companies may contact your vet for medical records
and could exclude some things as “pre-existing conditions”
Overall, take it from families who have had multiple issues with multiple dogs.
Though it may seem costly for the monthly fee it is WONDERFUL to have when something unexpected and expensive crops up.
